Gary's Big Buck

About 15-20 years ago I was deer hunting with my friend Gary in the Sylamore National Forest in Northern Arkansas. Since I was familiar with a particular area, I showed Gary an overgrown food plot and recommended we walk around the food plot to pick up a fire road on the other side.

After we walked several hundred yards into the forest, I told Gary I would hunt there and he could continue walking as far as he wanted. After an hour or so I heard Gary's .270 fire one time. Several minutes later I saw him walking toward me with his eyes as big as saucers and exhibiting an obvious adrenaline rush.

"I just missed the biggest buck I've ever seen!" he finally croaked. Of course his exuberance was contagious and my heart started racing too. Gary felt bad since he just knew the deer would never return.

I told Gary since the rut was on the deer may not have been as bothered as he thought. I recommended he hunt somewhere else for a couple of days and then return to this same spot.

Two or three days later Gary's luck paid off and he shot the buck when it came back to check it's scrape line. His bullet knocked it down and it ran off. Gary returned with a couple of hunting friends to trail it deeper into the forest. They finally located the buck laying down, and as soon as it started to rise Gary put it down for keeps.

The guys returned a few hours later with horses to carry the buck back to camp. By this time it was dark and a fog had rolled in. On the way back the horses started acting spooky and the guys thought they may have whiffed a black bear.

They finally arrived back in camp and Gary was able to finally sit down and admire his 14-point buck. I've never killed a deer as big as this, but I feel good that I was able to put one of my friends in the right place at the right time.
