Over the counter licenses?

Registered Users do not see the above ad.

I'm in Florida. Are there any species in the Rocky Mountain States that you can hunt by simply driving out and buying an over the counter license? I could get into the lottery/draw thing but the odds seem sort of remote in a lot of instances.

Colorado is the only one left, I think. Idaho has 8500 out of state elk tags available and has never sold out, last I heard.

Doesn't Wyoming have over the counter tags for antelope?

I think you're right. The best deal going is shooting hogs in Texas. There's a LONG list of ranchers that allow camping and hog hunting for free in a lot of County Agent's offices.

Idaho has over the counter Bear, Elk, wolf, mountain lion and deer tags for nonresidents. Plus your Deer or Elk tag is good for any of the above species, but only one. So say you buy a deer tag, you can shoot a deer, bear, wolf, or mountain lion with it. But only that one species, you shoot a bear with your deer tag, and you cant shoot a deer with it afterwards. There are a draw only areas, but the majority of Idaho is OTC for Nonresidents. A nonresident elk tag is 400 bucks, and nonresident deer tag is 300 last time I checked. The nonresident hunting license is 154. Good luck on your hunt and decision!

Had the impression that ranchers there considered them vermin until someone asks to hunt them at which time they become valuable livestock with a high fee to hunt them. Lived in Texas two years a few decades ago and only hunted waterfowl and doves there - went to other states for deer.

Here in Colorado you ca buy an over the counter Elk tag & hunt on your own. Deer ,bear & antelope are a drawing. I'm a resident & did not draw a deer tag last year for my area. However there are guides who have a certain amount of various tags made available to them from the state thru private property allotment. These tags don't cost you any more but you have to hire the guide at his prices to get the tag.

After the draw leftover deer, bear, and antelope tags are available over the counter, but many are sold out quickly - the availability is listed on the DPW website after the draw.

Co 2nd and 3rd elk rifle season you can buy OTC bull elk tags and their is map on which units tags are valid. There also what's called OTC either-sex elk
rifle Plains tag which runs from Sept 1, 2017 thru Jan 31, 2108 and it's mostly units east of I-25. There is little state land but most is private and some ranches will offer hunting or lease hunting rights out. I live in Plains unit and we have elk about mile from where I live.

I spend alot of time in the plains of Colorado and am extremely skeptical on this deal, I've seen about 10 elk on my place over 18 years. There are ranches where you see elk but it's a little suspicious because you see them before the season starts in enclosures {high fences} and then there gone until next year.
I have relatives from Pueblo to Greeley, they all suspect the same thing.

As you know not all plains units have elk. DOW publish stats on elk taken by unit and would be helpful if you could list units.

Unit 104 is not plains tag but has part of Denver down to county line rd and 2015 hunters took 37 bulls,60 cows/4 calf. Unit 105 plains tag is east of 104 and they took 18 bulls/10 cow, South of 104/105 is unit 110 and that's unit I live hunter took 17 bulls/5 cow/3 calf. Unit 118 is south of me and is north 123 they took 5 bulls and 119 is east and they took 4.

I spend lot of time down Pueblo and I almost move there out on the Mesa.

Unit is 123 is north of Pueblo and plains tag, 2015 they 8 bulls/5 cow and south of unit 123 is 128 not plains tag and they took 16 bulls/35 cow.

Before I move to Black Forest I live in Fort Collins off county Rd 36 south of the H-P plant. I worked out of Greeley and we had office in Cheyenne.
Unit 87 plains tag they took 2015 40 bulls/13 cows

Colorado Ranching for Wildlife has draw tag on private ranches and Kiowa Creek Ranch is one of them and you can put in for elk either sex or cow tag for units 104,105,110.

This is another place can draw tags for out east

You have no proof that those 2 ads are high fence hunts other than your skeptical. You won't tell either to their face as you might wind up lawsuit.
