Nothing wrong with "black" rifles & military lookalikes......but all the time every month? Get back to rifles & handguns us average shooters can afford. Wonder what "Cactus" Jack & "B.S" Keith would think of todays gun rag writers.....not much I bet. Anyone else have thoughts on this? When my subscriptions lapse on Shooting Times & Guns and Ammo I'm done!!

In the current issue of Guns magazine John Taffin did an article on the .22 TCM round. For decades the standard accuracy test for pistols was five round groups at 25 yards. In this article Taffin fired four round groups at 20 yards.

There have been many that would have claimed the fifth shot was in another one and the group was shot at a hundred....

Same with Jeff Cooper who's quotes get missed used constantly.

Understand they make money from advertising not subscriptions. They do everything they can to keep advertisers happy and play the market which is largely ARs and wonder 9s. I still get American Rifleman, but 90% of them go into the trash. I prefer the decades of old ones I have with the great old tech staff.

I haven't bought a gun mag in decades.
I'll bet there are a lot of us who wanting to be like Skeeter Skelton when we grew up!
I still have my subscription to American Rifleman, which is good for one Historical article a month.
I will buy old books written by the great outdoor writers and shooters though. Perfect for a quiet evening at home.
ABE Books is where I find them. They also look very cool in the book case.

Sad fact, most are rewrites of old articles and not as good as the original article. That's why 90% of mine get filed in the trash.

The only one worth a hoot to me is the CBA magazine, The Fouling Shot. Regular guys still send in articles about their current project and they get published. That, and Ed Harris still answers the mail.

I bought three gun mags off the news stand three years ago as 'research' for my book. They were somewhere between a waste of money and voluntarily being offended....like going to a Don Rickles show.

I don't like to be force-fed 'commercial information' from TV, radio or magazines so don't have any of them on hand.

Information for information sake is worth gathering and keeping.

BTW-- It's interesting to note the attitude of the magazine and book editors: NO 'we went hunting' stories are bought. They're thought to be on non-seller. "How to" stories are run through so many lawyers nobody is likely to read it, and "I had a rifle built" stories are only published if advertizing dollars changes hands. A call-out to good workmanship from a respected writer seems a thing of the past. The publishing business has changed tremendously!

I'm surprised that the current standard isn't 10 rounds at 7 yards!
From what I read on-line and the sorts of articles being published,
the "market" is interested in tactical shooting and little else

Bill, you know that CE Harris as in Ed of Ed's Red writes like crazy for that one. When we pistol shoot together I always get a good chuckle out of some of the crazy pistols he gets into. When he was doing 32acp, I told him some of his f*rts were louder than the pistol rounds!

I did get a chance to bust him last issue that the H&G 68 was bevel base, the 69 was flat base. He didn't believe me until it turned up last issue (yes I read it too). Always said the 68 wqas originally flat base. It wasn't!

I am tempted to do a write up of some of the crazy things we did during the early IPSC days. For the Turkey shoot, I often loaded FFFg just to screw with some heads (except for the old guard) Lots of fun.

I just got a complimentary issue of Sports Afield in the mail, and it surprised me--not one ad that I found offensive, some decent art and articles; almost seemed like they were channeling Gray's Sporting Journal, except the art wasn't THAT fantastic. I may just subscribe; they're gonna need to sell some copies if they're taking a pass on the plastic popgun ad money.
Mind yer topknots!

I haven't come across an issue of Rifle in years, but that had always been a classy magazine.
Is it still being published? What is it like these days?
