I'm not sure where to put this.
I just found this and thought some of you might appreciate it.

Thanks LilysDad, as you say learn something everyday. I had watched many times this ceremony and just thought it was a fitting conclusion to a sad day with the presentation to the kin.

I am honoured to know that, thank you.

Would that someone, whenever it is done, pronounce out the collective ethos for all to hear, naming each distinctive fold as it is done. Particularly now after the flag desecrators have been shamed.

At military retirement ceremonies it is called out for each fold, as it's folded. Don't know about funerals.

In the "new America" which is on the horison it should be done at every possible moment to keep on strengthening this symbol in peoples' hearts and keeping on rubbing the anti-American Americans' who insult the flag and the anthem noses in the dirt.

In the Old South Africa we had a "Flag Act" and desecrating it was a criminal offence.

While this is a touching story there is nothing factual about it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/21-gun_salute
To start off with the 21 gun salute.

"The 21 gun salute might have originated in the 17th century with the maritime practice of demanding that a defeated enemy expend its ammunition and render itself helpless until reloaded, a time-consuming operation. The gun salute had been established as a naval tradition by the late sixteenth century. A man-of-war which visited a foreign port would discharge all its guns to show that its guns were empty. Since the ship would not have enough time to reload before it was within range of the shore batteries, it was clearly demonstrating its friendly intentions by going in with empty guns."
The 21 gun salute is pretty much a global tradition and has nothing to do with 1776.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-volley_salute
The 21 gun salute should not be confused with the Three Volley Salute at military funerals.

USFlag.org: A website dedicated to the Flag of the United States of America - Flag Folding
That particular script is accredited to an anonymous chaplain at the Air Force Academy.
And there is a plethora of such scripts floating around.

Flag Fold Meanings : snopes.com
"The American flag isn't folded in this manner because each of the folds has a special symbolic meaning; the flag is folded this way because it provides a dignified ceremonial touch that distinguishes folding a flag from folding an ordinary object such as a bedsheet, and because it results a visually pleasing, easy-to-handle shape. This thirteen-fold procedure was a common practice long before the creation of a ceremonial assignation of "meaning" to each of the steps."

Just an FYI
