This is the helmet worn by me for many years as an Army pilot. I put it away, with my career many years ago. My wife asked if she could dig into my "stuff" for the grands. The "steel" pot was given to our oldest male grand some 4 months ago. I absolutely refused to pass on my flight helmet yet, it seems so close to me still. (silly, I understand)

My wonderful grands have all worn it, but i think it will stay here with me as something I cherish until I'm "gone". I left it stored for 20 years, but feel a lot of memories flood back every time I put it back on (including tonight).

I reckon I'm just a silly old man... , but I'm sure many of you already knew that!!

After my return from Vietnam I got rid of everything that reminded me of it. Well not really everything. I kept my dog tags my CIB badge and 2 Purple Heart's. Like you memories flood back whenever I look at them. I do not look at them very often now. Some things are best left in the past.

Tnhunter, your not a silly old man. Your a man who served his country with honor. For that we all thank you.
Silly old man no just a MAN.

And my dog tags hang off a lamp sitting on top of my dresser.

Fish, Thank you for your dedicated service to our great nation.

Tnhunter: Some of our special things, just mean more to us than than others do. I still have my old Flight Helmet packed in the green nylon Helmet Bag that I was issued at Ft Wolters Tx back in 1970. It is still filled with all the stuff I thought I needed to fly with every day then, extra different colored Visors, My old whiz wheel, some old maps and charts, and 5 or 6 pairs of different colored Ray Ban sunglasses with the hooks . That I can`t wear any more because my ears are not tough enough. That Old Flight Helmet Bag holds a lot of very exciting memories for Me. Of when I was young, and thought I was ten feet tall and bullet proof. I never did any thing that even came close in comparison to it for the rest of my life. Nor did I ever have that type of extremely close friends, that would walk thru fire for you. And not even have to be asked since I left the US ARMY. I was in love with that Uniform and way of Life, and I still miss it. I miss it every day. No I don`t think there is any thing wrong with you or your feeling`s. It is just really hard to try to explain thoes type of feeling`s to other people. That have not had Your type of experiences. It has been good for me, to get to talk to you. ((( THANKS )))

I absolutely understand. My SPH-4 is on the top shelf of my reloading bench. One of the grandsons might get it, one day.
