Gander Tragedy

Registered Users do not see the above ad.

Thirty one years ago yesterday 248 soldiers from Ft Campbell and the 101st Airborne Division died in a crash just after take off from Gander Newfoundland on their way back to Ft Campbell.

A very tragic event for everyone associated with Ft Campbell. The soldiers had just spent 6 months on a peacekeeping mission in Sinai, Egypt and were very excited to be headed home in time to spend Christmas with family and friends.

We've known many people over the years who lost spouses and even parents on that fateful day. My wife works daily with a woman who lost her husband in that terrible crash and has never remarried.

The tragic loss of so many young lives in an instant is a constant reminder that there are no guarantees in this life and it is still comforting to family and friends that Ft Campbell holds a memorial service for those lost every year.

We Shall Never Forget.

I watched the report on ABC News with Peter Jennings. Brought my memory back to when the Marine barracks in Beirut was bombed and we lost 241 young, strong and brave Marines. The American military man does so much for us. The least we can do is to remember them and their sacrifices...

I have landed in Gander myself as many service men and women have. The last time I made that flight from the Sinai back to the states was exactly 10 yrs later in December 1995. While I do not recall if it was on the exact anniversary it was very close if it wasn't.

I also remember the tragedy itself, of course, as I was serving at Ft Meade when it occurred. Thanks to you all that stopped by to comment.

I remember as well. We heard the news that day before 2nd formation. Mostly guys from the 502nd. It's hard to believe it's been that long. In later years, my wife and I used to walk along the park with our daughters.
