I have recently gotten back in touch with an Army pilot I met and flew with back in the early 80s. We had been very good friends and I consider him a mentor to me back then. He was a senior pilot and I a pretty junior one back then.

Well, turns out that he's just seen the 50th anniversary of the wound he got while flying in Vietnam. I just stared at that fact typed to me. I ended up spending much more time in combat areas than he did, but he knows how much I respect that Purple Heart he was awarded all those years ago. As a professional pilot, it's odd to say that another pilot is "better". But this man is the only one I'll admit "might" have been better than I.

He flew a lot of hours in the Army and was a close personal friend of a pilot that was killed in Somalia (Blackhawk Down) while I was there as well.

Thank you to all that have served and I would like to say to those who served when it was less "popular" to, thank you for your service, I appreciate what you have done for me, my family and the entire Nation.

Time sure does fly by!

I think of Feb. 19, 1966 every year because I had two of those days on the plane coming back from a year in Korea.
I missed Jan. 23, 1965 on the troop ship going over. That was a good thing. Coming back was MUCH better!
