Got out to 150 yards with the 58cal Hawken and am ready to drop a doe come September! 2 clicks up puts me perfectly out to 150 yards with 100gr Goex 2f, .020" Mink Oil Lubed patch and .570" Hornady round balls.

Top group was with the bore swabbed completely clean of fouling with no color on the patch. That far left was my fault as I felt the rifle bump over to the left as I squeezed the trigger. The other 2 in the center were Aprox 2 1/2" apart.

The lower 3 in the white were also with a swabbed bore between shots, but left lightly blue after running a couple dry patches down the bore.

Now the real fun? If its nice, Its time to back out to 170 yards, the max range I can shoot on my property without having to climb a tree.

I have to agree with Romack... 150 yards with iron sights and my 78 year old eyes probably isn't likely to happen... especially with the .068 Ballistic Coefficient of the patched, round rifle ball I shoot outta my .50 caliber CVA.

I limit my shots on live game to just 80 yards with my hunting rifle... an older .50 caliber CVA cap-lock Hunter-Hawken Carbine (24" barrel, 6½ lbs.) using only 70 grains of Swiss FFFg with a patched, round Hornady swagged rifle ball and a thin over-powder, vegetable-fiber wad. Accuracy is very good (3 inter-locking holes in the paper @ 50 yards off the "bench-rest").

At 80 yards (or preferably less), 70 grains of Swiss FFFg can put the rifle ball THROUGH a deer with a "kill zone" shot and out the other side... so why use more powder? Recoil is relatively "medium" and it puts venison "in-the-freeze"... no problem. :)
