Hi, Im new to this forum so please bear with me. I've taking a liking to lever actions and Im interested in possibly getting a Model 94.One of my managers at work claims to have a Model 94 with a larger hand loop. Whats the main purpose of this and do they still make them? thank you

sean,
as far as making them any more i don't know.
but i do have the large loop (aka John Wayne)on a 94 44mag. it works great when shooting with gloves on.
mike.

ps. do not try to do the Rooster Cogburn with a loaded gun, it dosn't always work and it's a little dangerous! experience needed!!!

Moslty it's a style issue...it just changes the "look" of the rifle. Yes...does fit a gloved hand better, but who actually pulls a trigger with mittens on (unless you cut a hole for your trigger finger to poke through). Even if you could 'twirl' a rifle (and a full sized '94 certainly could be a wrist breaker), having a loaded gun pointing in a big circle doesn't seem to be a very safe idea...I for one, would not want to be arround you while you did it and the range offcier would have you back in the parking lot in no time.

If you like the look of it, then thsat's all that's needed....but I haven't found a rational reason for one.

It's been a while since I've visited. But this thread caught my eye.

First of all there is NO danger in twirling a loaded Winchester 94. If you start with the barrel of the rifle in the about the 10 o'clock position (action closed) and twirl the rifle. The action remains open through most of the arch. With the barrel in the 3 o'clock position (pointing towards the you) the action is completely open. At about the 8 o'clock postion the action startes to close. The barrel is pointed away from you. When the rifle makes the complete arch back to to 10 o'clock the action is closed.

But in order to keep the cartridge from falling out you need to give the rifle a fast twirl. Practice, Practice, Practice.

I'm 5'9" and weigh 170 pounds. No broken wrists here. But you need to put a soft cover over the front site when first trying it out. This keeps the front site from cutting your arm. Been there. Not anymore though. Master Twirler.

You can acquire a Winchester 94 large loop lever from Numrich Gun Parts.

And for a Rossi 92 try M&M Gunsmithing. They had large loop levers. I don't know if they still have them.

And also Steves Gunz had them but I don't know if they have any.

On another note. I saw a Winchester 73 clone with a large loop lever twirled by Captain Woodrow Algren in the Last Samurai. Looked cool but not the right time period. Gotta love Hollywood.

Have had to wear the RO hat...while I agree about twriling done right's basic safety, try that on a range and you'll be escorted off...same with handgun spinning, flipping the gun to point backwards while you work on the sights, and a host of other problems...I try to duck my RO duties ad i do not like being the gun nazi of the day and whould rather shoot that watch people shoot. Better to save the tricks for when you are alone.

Why would anyone want to try it a range?

Now for the reason the large loop lever was created. It was created for Johnny Ringo in Stagecoach which starred John Wayne. They needed a gimmick gun for the hero to use.

But on another note, I don't remember where or who, but someone posted some information that back in the ol' west a large loop lever was an option in the cold northwest. It was an option offered by the manufacture I believe. The loop was not as big as the John Wayne lever but this shows that the large loop was not really a hollywood invention.

I have an old Rossi/Interarms 16" carbine with a large loop lever and a saddle ring. I have no real reason for either one, but it looks great and the rifle shoots the same (very accurate and dependable.)

I like the way it looks, and I love the way it shoots. No changes are planned.
