That's true for an 1894C Marlin or maybe a 94 Trapper. Most 94 carbines hold 10 rounds of .44-40 or .44Mag so I would assume that it would be the same for the .357Mag.
Well I was looking on Gunbroker and someone was selling his Win94 in 357 because he said it only held 9 rounds and cowboy shooting requires 10. And I need 10 for the same thing, cowboy action.

That's no worries, it is obviously a short barrel model. Keep your eyes open for a rifle with a barrel of 20" or longer with a full length magazine and you'll be sweet.
If you have trouble finding one and you're not a died in the wool Winchester man, the Marlin Cowboy is also worth a look.
If it only holds 9 rounds, it would have to be one of the short barreled/short magazine tube models, like the Trapper. My 24" barreled 94 AE holds 13 rounds of .44 mag in the tube. Same thing with my '92 in .45 Colt.
check it out though. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=66874854
He says :
Winchester model 94AE caliber .357 magnum lever-action rifle. The previous owner purchased this angle-eject carbine in hopes of using it for Cowboy Action Shooting only to find out that all the SASS events require a rifle to hold ten rounds. This Winchester will only hold nine rounds, so you see his dilemma. This Winchester is angle-eject and factory drilled and tapped for a top mounted scope, if you wish to scope the rifle.
So what model 94AE is this ? Obviously I can't use it and I just want to make sure I look for the right model Win94.

Yeah, looks like a trapper. Something like a Trails End would do the job. There are numerous '94 sub models, but no matter which, a 20" or longer barrel with a full length magazine will hold enough rounds unless it has been plugged.
[Edit: bad spelling, uless doesn't mean anything ]

Most of my .30-30 Win. hold 6+1. But two that I shoot now hold 7+1. All I did was to shorten the feed tube spring enough to gain that extra round. It's simple to do and the benifits are easier loading, smoother feeding. Or try .38 special. They are a tad shorter. Maybe enough to gain a round.
I have a Winchester 94 Legacy with a 24" barrel which holds more than 10 rounds of .38 or .357, but it gets pretty hard to push more than 8 - 9 into the magazine, (stiff spring). Also, watch the cartridge stop for wear. With a full magazine and wear on the cartridge stop, it can misfeed when you cycle the first few rounds. Sure is a ton of fun to shoot, though!
The Trails End models and the Legacy models are chambered for .357 mag and carry 10 or more rounds.
