Note: The first part of the above post answers another thread. I moved it here for the question about a swaging press.

R15vtr,

I assume you want to make your own jacketed bullets? Not an inexpensive thing to set up for, but Corbin is probably the best known maker of this equipment. At the rate bullet prices have been climbing, more people may wind up doing this?

Too little info...

What do you intend to swage?

Mr. Corbin, Dave (has a brother, Richard, in same line of work, different web site) has his books posted on his web sites for review, download, etc. [No pictures...].

If you intend lead or jacketed pistol bullets or small rifle bullets, then a heavy reloading press is adequate. The Rockchucker was produced by/for RCBS which stands for Rock Chucker Bullet Swage. Dozens of comparables and the conversion of this size press for use with match dies by Deutsch, Nemmii, etc. Common knowledge.

The Corbins have a broad range. I believe it is out of production but is available used, the "M" /"Mighty Mite" press takes smaller dies for the same range of bullets.

In between there is a larger press for the smaller stuff and hand producing anything up to lead .50 cal black powder stuff. (Or larger).

From there you get into the huge presses, some hydralulic. With these you can swage pure copper. Make the boat tailed .50 machine gun bullets.

SO what do you plan to make. From there the budget will dictate your options. Studying Mr. Dave Corbins book (Rediscover Swaging #9) will be a big and enlightening help. LUCK.

Swaging press, Rock Chucker. Supreme and 11, call 1 800 533 5000 and order a swaging ram (solid) that is press specific, Herters, Herters made an adapter for their presses, neither the ram for the RCBS or Herters adapter have a cut or hole for primers.

OK, I know one can buy [expensve] swaging dies from Corbin for Corbin presses. Do they fit the RCBS or Herters with special rams?

It kills me to see all those .22LR shells just thrown out, when each one could be a .22 or .243 jacket... But, the tools from corbin would run about $600 to swage bullets from them!

I have a Corbin "S" press. It is the berries as far as bench swaging is concerned. The Rockchucker and CH4d die combo is good but the Corbin stuff - and you pay for it - is a step up. I haven't tried the jacketed stuff, at least not the FMJ route but have found that I can produce very nice soft points with half jackets - thinwall copper tubing works.
I swage bullets in .429, .452, .458. Using a little lathe, in addition, I'm able to make very substantial .458 jacketed bullets using .45 ACP brass and/or cut down .30-06 brass.
Here's a link to a thread about this idea: http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=45365

I am planning on making fmj for 223/243/270..and if possible 338 lm....I have done some research I can get a hydro press for around 4k..I also like the idea of doing it buy hand..I have checked out some Corbin presses as well as RCE..which are a little cheaper than the Corbin..was wondering if anyone had any experience with RCE
