The first thing I do is remove the barrel from the stock. This is done by taking the two locking lug screws out of the stock on the bottom of the barrel. Then I like to remove the trigger assembly. That is held on by two allen screws. Now you have basically the barrel with the bolt and cocking lever showing.

On the back end of your barrel where the bolt is, there is a locking lug nut called the breech cap. Under that nut is a spring. You unscrew the breech cap nut on the back of the barrel. Careful it is under spring tension. Remove that and the spring. Now pull back on the cocking lever and bring the bolt all the way to the back. Pull the cocking lever arm out and then push the bolt through the back of the rifle.

Now with your breech plug removal tool you can reach through the back of the rifle and remove the breech plug. If the plug is stuck or hard to remove, take the rifle to your shop. Cover the locking lug block with leather or something to protect it. Squirt penetrating oil on the breech plug and down the barrel to help loosen it. Now with that barrel in a vice holding the locking lug block, you can put a little more pressure on it. Try and work it loose.

If the breech plug is really set in there because it has not been removed recently, or you did not grease the plug. Pour boiling water down the barrel and through the plug. The boiling water will heat the barrel and as it cools, we all know how metal will expand and contract with heat, you can sometimes get the plug to come loose.

After you clean the rifle, be sure to put a wrap of Teflon tape on the plug and some anti seize before putting the breech plug back in the rifle.

All of this is in your manual by the way. I have a CVA Staghorn Magnum which is what your gun replaced.
