I'm seriously considering a Ruger no. 1 45-70 and will be loading the 250 Barnes HOT (52k psi) and my oldest son wants a lever action 45-70 which obviously cant handle the no. 1 loads (would be loading the lever rounds to low 40s psi). So I was thinking just for safety, does anyone offer nickel plated brass in 45-70? If so that would assure never mixing up ammo.
You could also use pointy bullets in the #1 instead of flat nose bullets like those needed for the tubular magazine. That would be an easy way to tell them apart.
I have some nickel plated 45-70 brass I use for hunting loads. They don't tarnish or corrode like the brass cases when stored in the leather belt caddy.
Depending on the amount of shooting involved, I would shy away from nickle brass. They are considerably tougher on the sizing dies from my experience. Guess I would try some other way to tell them apart like what was suggested above.
