Recently obtain a long range 700 in .223 I put a Nikon 3x9x40 on it but want to upgrade but not spend an arm and leg. What inexpensive 4x12x40's are good scopes....
How far is "long range"? My 223's routinely get out to 400 yards and I found that when shooting ground dwelling rodents the size of a Red Bull can even a 4-16 wasn't enough, but 4-12 might work for your eyes.
Vortex Crossfires II's, Simmons Whitetail classics aren't too bad either although the cross hairs are a bit "thick". I have both and both just work. One (Simmons)is on my Sendero SFII 300RUM so they will take the punishment. Bushnell should have one in the range you are looking for maybe.
When it comes to optics, what ya see is, well...what ya paid for, really.
Putting it another way, I'd rather have a quality scope of any magnification than an inexpensive model of higher magnification that won't do the job. The Vortex Viper is a very good scope for the money and what I have on my 223. My 225 Winchester came with a Leupold and it's also excellent.
Another choice depending on your budget is the older Bushnell 4200 Elite w/sun shade , found on Ebay for under $500 . I have one (new) I got from ebay also a set of Burris Z rings and a set of inserts ($80) will allow you to shoot from 50 feet to 1000 yrds. well worth the money as the newer models sell up at $600.
In your intended magnification range, I highly recommend the Vortex Diamondback HP in 3-12×42. It has side focus for parallax and excellent eye relief (not that you need it for a .223) and eye "box" manners.
I got one for my .270WSM and its a very good scope for the $$. No issues and an excellent value in its class. I think it's well worth a look as you make your decision.
