I've tried several different scopes and powers on my 336, and finally settled on the perfect (for me) choice. It's a simple fixed 4x Nikon.

Congrats on buying what has been a fine U.S. made rifle for many years. The 30/30 is not a long range number, useful to perhaps 250 yards or so. So, in my mind, zero use for 9, 10 or 12X scopes on top. Two scope types I'd recommend would be a 1-4x20 or 2-7x32(33). These are some VERY useful ranges for typical hunting needs. the Weaver V3 1-3x20 is a nice scope too.

Look at a Leupold VXI 1-4x20 or 2-7x33 at around $200. first and then perhaps a Redfield 2-7 or Elite 3200 2-7 after those.

Congrats on your purchase and GOOD LUCK!!

I had the Nikon on top of mine (3X9X50) I also have bad eyesight, so the "50" size scope helped me a lot in low light.
Some say its to much, but I didnt think so.

What are you going to hunt and in what conditions? I set my lever guns up for low light pig shooting. That means good glass. Think I have a variety of 2x7 and 2.5x8 scopes on several of them. Works great and not too large.

For ordinary deer hunting in daylight hours, a plain 4x should be just great.

Good luck......

Bushnell Scope

My 336C has a Bushnell Banner 4X32 fixed power shotgun scope. The reticle is the Circle-Dot. It's a 30-30 and with Hornady's LeverEvolution loads will shoot 7 shots in 1 1/2" at 100 yards. Hope this helps.

Leupold 2.5x Compact:

My 336 is topped with a Leupold Compact 2.5x in low Weaver rings on a receiver length weaver base. This is the lightest and lowest scope and mount system available for this traditional lever action deer rifle. The scope weighs 6 ounces and the ring/base adds another 2 ounces.

Additionally, should I need to remove the scope the original iron sights can be clearly seen without removing the scope base. Using WW 170 Power Point factory ammo, the scope is set up to place the bullet 2.5" above the reticle at 100 yards, and 6" low at 200 yards. The reserve iron sights are zeroed for 100 yards with the same load. An Uncle Mike's hammer extention and Mountain Sling with quick detachable swivels complete the set up.

I have a Bushnell 1.5-4 on mine. Hunting deer in eastern Pa. Never get more than a 100 yard shot. It's held up well for the last four years.

I think that looks just fine and I'm glad you posted the picture. All my rifles have a 50mm objective. I'm shopping a BLR right now and have been debating what scope to put on it. I just can't imagine what a 1.5-5x20mm would feel like looking through it. Has to be like looking through a straw. Can anyone recommend a large objective fixed power?
