I'm curious why the largest bullet you can get in 30-30 ammo is 170 gr. Why hasn't any ammo maker make a larger 30-30 (a .30 caliber bullet)bullet? I'm not a bullet expert and correct me if I'm wrong but the venerable 30-06 (another .30 caliber bullet) has rounds of 180 gr and 200 gr. round
The 30-30 case holds about 38grns of watter, the 30-06 case holds about 68grns of watter, it's my guess that you simply can't get enough powder behind a bigger bullet to make it worth while?
On the other hand, the .303 Savage is close to the .30-30 in case capacity and used a 190 grain bullet. At least one old-timer around here (older than kdub) claimed the 190 grain bullet was a much better moose bullet than the 170 grain bullet. Some reloaders used the 190 grainer in the .30-30.
Sam Fadala pulled 303 190 gr bullets for the 30-30 in the old days, but I believe Hawk Bullets makes a 30-30 bullet in the weight you want, 190 gr FP. They ain't cheap ($37.00/50) but then quality never is. http://www.hawkbullets.com/Pricelist.htm

Kenneth Fuller Lee and Ken Waters both said the same thing. I believe Al Barr and H. V. Stent also made similar remarks.<O</O It is probably a trade off between velocity and trajectory, along with the publics perception: faster is better.<O</O
The 170 grain, along with the 150 grain, have probably won out over the years by the millions of hunters and shooters, as the best trade off for effect and recoil. For most, especially if we are not hunting moose with our .30-30, the 150 or 170 are perfectly adequate for hunting deer.
If you want heavier, use a cast bullet of 180-190 grain.
