Winchester DoubleX Shotdhells

Anybody use them? They kill fine, but the pellets I recovered from 2 different turkeys look way smaller than the #6 they are supposed to be - more like #7 1/2 or #8. On the first, I assumed it was from someone who had shot at it earlier, but the second had the same.

Shot sizes in the US are standardized. What does the micrometer say? "Too small by eyeball" ain't enough for a skeptic!

I still have two plus boxes of the 3" #4 lead shot versions. The best patterning factory waterfowl shells I ever saw.

In with some of my grandfather stuff was a box or two of Winchester XX shells. These were 3 3/4 dram equivalent loads and I kept one or two on my shooting vest for a long time. My shooting buddy ran out of shells shooting trap and ask me for a shell. It was late in the afternoon I was looking at the shells trying to think if I should give him the double X load. He said "Will you give me a shell" so as a good buddy I did. A flame came out about three feet from the muzzle of his high grade Browning trap gun. He thought I had given him a black powder load. He said what the ____ was that. I was having trouble talking as it seemed pretty funny to me.

It is kind of fun to reload these and for a couple of reloads they come out like new. They look real cool as when done. You could have a box of shells that were reloaded with different components, shot etc.

Winchester XX and Winchester AA shared a compression formed case but the brass base is higher in the XX. Case capacity is the same and either load can be loaded in either shell.
Y'all make them sound like antiques and I still shoot them!

Just found an old box of ten 2 3/4" XX marked $5. The new box of 3" cost $20 at Big 5. Inflation! I'm used to paying $2 per cartridge for my premium elk/moose magnum ammo, but $2 per shotshell for turkeys is unjustified . If I use these up (8 left in each box), I'll go back to using regular high brass 3 3/4 dr 1 1/4 oz loads - I doubt the turkeys can tell the difference - my first few turkeys a half century ago were just as dead from a 1 oz load from a 16 ga.

Touche' My eyes must be getting worse, no wonder my trap and skeet scores are declining. Just measured one 0.114" - #6.
