Bought myself an Encore

Registered Users do not see the above ad.

Rochester production, used, blued/walnut, serial # 107xxx, and she's a 270. Out the door for $500. Shows little use and has a very nice trigger. I think I got a decent deal. First Encore for me, am hopeful of good things to report. Have always enjoyed single shot rifles ( H&R/NEF) and thought it would be nice to try the Encore.

Thumbs up

Congratulations! I owned a nice blue/walnut Encore a while back and liked the handy OAL with the 24" barrels I had for it (25/06 & .35Whelen).

I'm sure you are going to enjoy that new rifle!

The guy will certainly need counselling. It is very stressful being an Encore Nut Case. Ask me how I know ?

Only due to HM Government, do I only have two actions and six barrels ...well seven if you include the 20 gauge.
They have OK'd me to acquire a further action in the future, but they are like Rocking Horse doo doo over here.

Enjoy your new rifle.

I guess the condition is incurable... Ok! I like the 270. Got my bear with a 111 Savage so chambered. I'm kind of a shorter range guy though. I' d like a 30 WCF, 45-70 or maybe a 35 Whelen , for bigger than deer. A 38-55 would be quite nice too. Then there's the pistol configuration. Muzzleloader is ok, but I already have 2 Black Diamond XR's. A Super 45 and a 50.
Yup. Terminal...

And it's back to the therapist for me!

I don't have an Encore, but a couple Contender frames, with two barrels each. I'm terrified of buying an Encore frame, because it is SO easy to buy another barrel...and then another.

Sorta like what Jack said.

The internet is BAD!
So much info out there, one should really shoot the rifle before reading all the pro's and con's! Too many options! Worse than the 10/22 Ruger...
I hope to shoot my Encore tomorrow. I'm praying the recoil isn't too bad. The pivot point of the stock is so far below the bore axis than I'm expecting a good slap on the cheek. Recoil is not my friend... Would a thumbhole stock be better?
Anybody try the EAB locking hinge pin? Seems well reviewed. My current pin seems to fit properly. Of course shooting will tell.
I'm considering what calibers I would like to have. Too many to choose from I'm afraid. 22 Hornet ( maybe 223?), 30-30 ( perhaps a 308?) and a 35 Whelen is intriguing ( even though I'll probably never NEED it). I've always wanted a 357 Magnum and ( properly bored) 44 Magnum rifle too. Won't even get into pistol barrels... Oh boy...

your hinge pins shouldn't cause you any problems. but if they are loose, go to a next bigger size. i believe they are 1X hinge pin.

Bellm TCs - Bellm Oversized Hinge Pins T/Cs

i use a high plains gunstock(well 2 of them). they both are a factory style. they do a pegasus style thunbstock. i luv my high plains but there are cheaper ones on the market.i have a flextech stock, but i don't use them. a good wooden or laminate stock is the best.(just me)

TC Encore Contender Thumbhole stocks from High Plains Gunstocks - HIGH PLAINS GUNSTOCKS

i have them in a MGM heavy factory barrel(20 vartarg, 6.5 creedmoor and 444 marlin) with a high plains gunstock. with a scope they probably goes around 8 - 8 1/2 lbs. yours will probably not recoil as much. i have a ruger #1 in 270 (goes about 8 lbs) and the recoil is about what my 30-30 does.

i soon to have a 500 linebaugh in a 23" MGM heavy factory barrel. it will come with a skinner sights(peep and front sight)that should go approx. 8lbs. i'm planning on using a 450gr lfn gc about 1300fps. it shouldn't do much recoil, it will be like a 30-06 using 180gr factory loads.

this year i plan on doing a bellm's trigger job and hammer springs. but its something that i "can have", not "have to have".

yes, bellm's have whatever you want. bellm's is the best when you have to accuracy. oh no, i did another one!!!oh no!!!!!i did two!!!

Had a 500 S&W Handi Rifle for the amount of time it took me to shoot a box of Winchester Platinums... The front sight took off for the boonies, the action popped open twice and I got the nicest recoil hickey EVER. The 500 needs a rifle with a bit of weight to it... Sold it to a fella who said he was gonna make a 50-140 Sharps out of it. If he did, I bet his shoulder blades touch!

my friend has the same thing you have had, 500s&w in handi rifle but he tops his off with a 2-7x(i forget what name). i shot it, i believe 3 times. i tried a 440gr wfn and a 500gr lfn and a 700gr wfn. the 440gr hurt me, but i could still shoot it. the 500gr brought a tear to my eye but it was shootable. the 700gr, well i could tell you, but i passed out after i screamed "MY GOD". that gun and load should be burned before a cross while chanting" my God, forgive me, i know what not i could have done". i swear that i seen demons around the gate of He## go "dear Lord, save him!!!".

i gave him back his gun and i swear i will never touch a 500s&w again. although it might hurt me, the 500 linebaugh will never hurt me as bad as the 500s&w did. if the 500L can do 1200fps+/- with a 450gr lfn then i'm satisfied. the deer won't be satisfied!

i'd tell your friend, to go with a 50-70 government, his shoulder blades won't touch!!!!

Enjoy the new Encore and congratulations to the brotherhood. Encores are an obsession of some sort. Word of caution and advice from someone who knows.... in spite of what you read on the net.... if it is not broke, do not try to fix it. Take it for what it is, a break open hunting rifle. If you get 1.5 inches or less at 100 yards, leave them alone. Just sayin'

i use MGM barrels. i don't use tc barrels. if they are a tc barrel, then its better if you can get 1.5" or less than that. if you use MGM barrels, the sky is your limit.

i had my tc encore in a 23" MGM barrel that is a 444 marlin(275gr ranch dog/rel7). i was trying to get my scope set at 100yards. 1 was below the target, so i moved it up. 2 and 3(ipulled) was right on the target. 4 and 5, still needed to go up and a little to the left. 6 i just pulled. 7,9 and 10 is where i wanted to be(8 i pulled again). the calipers said that it will go .690". and if you take .432" away, you get .258".(you can go .690" - .216" = .474", this is what i go by).

i know that MGM does great job, so all credit goes to them. i just reload and shoot, which everybody should do. i do only 3 shots to get my rifle ready. i do 5 shots when i'm trying to find a load for(it goes .6" at 100 yards/ 5 shots). i have a 20 vartarg (32g rnosler/rel7) that goes .2" at 100 yards and a 6.5 creedmoor(120gr bt/superformane) that goes .4" at 100 yards(5 shots on both). the orignal trigger and hammer spring, i still use. but i am going to try bellm's . will they work? probably,i just would like my trigger to go around 3lbs(it goes 5 - 6 lbs). do i need that? no, but i can.

since my stroke, i no longer "need" to do a 5 shots in the same hole. i would be happy if my encores only did 1.5" (3shots) at 100 yards. heck, i'll be happy with 3" at 100 yards when my 500 linebaugh (tc encore, 23" MGM barrel) comes.

I have been lucky then with my barrels , as they all group 1 moa or better if I do my job. All I have done is a Bellm job on the triggers. The tightening of the screws holding the fore end also seems to effect groups for some. I converted the T/C quick release system to my own upgrade which puts the same pressure on every time. Suggestion with the screws , buy a small torque wrench and tighten the same torque setting, every time.
I only have barrels made at the original factory..through Fox Ridge, plus an SSK barrel, plus a wildcat barrel, the blank of which I do not know it's origin, I do know it put's them all in a big hole at 100 and shoots the 100gr TTSX bullets like lasers.
