Well I finally picked up my Browning Low Wall in 45 Colt. I loaded some 255 grain cast bullets, and some Hornady 250 grain XTP's with 18.0 grains of 2400. This load is pretty dirty in the bore. The 2400 is not dirty in my 44 magnums, so I can not figure out why it is dirty in the 45 Colt. I am using WLP primers, and no crimp. Maybe I am not getting enough pressure??
So I am loking for a good clean burning powder for the 45 Colt with 70% or better case fill, Winchester large pistol primers, and no crimp. Does anyone have any good powder ideas I should try for a clean burn??
I also have a couple of pounds of Blue Dot on the bench. Does anyone know if this will burn clean in the Low Wall??
I have thought about crimping, and I prefer not too. I also have a bunch of the Winchester primers so I really want to stay with those primers and not change or go to a magnum primer. Tom.
I load 18 grs of 2400 in my .45LC, but I use a CCI mag primer....and older friend of mine many years ago (he's gone now) told me that 2400 needs a mag primer, so I've always used them with it....you might give that a try and see how it works for you..... I also use a good firm roll crimp, both the crimp, and the mag primer will get that 2400 burning much better .....
I think Elmer Keith's old standby load was 20 grs. but I don't go that high with mine......
I have given a lot of thought and research to your exact recommendation before I even loaded my first round. However I have read in several places(including mfrs. recommendations) that it is not a good idea to mix 2400 and magnum pistol primers in the 45 Colt. I do it in my 44 magnums, So I will admit the information is a bit confusing to say the least.
I may just be overthinking this whole thing.
However I have not worked up a final load yet. So if I can find a good clean burning load without crimping---then why not??
I would like to extend my case life with the cost of toaday's components. So that is why I do not want to crimp. This rifle will be shot ALOT. Tom.
I hear ya...I don't think crimping will hurt the case life that much....the .45 LC is great on cases, specially since the new brass is better than the old balloon head brass...... I've been shooting that load a lotta years and the 100 rounds of brass I bought are still going strong ....I was worried it was too much for my '73 Uberti copy, but it does just fine too....I crimp in the channelure for the Hornaday XTP loads, and in the regular crimp groove for the cast bullet loads..... The pistol even burns clean this way, and it's only a 4 5/8' bbl ......
I would try a bit of a taper crimp, if you are worried about brass life. Or anneal them all after the first split?
