There are Ruger #1s made in .35 Whelen out there and I've seen several NIB for $1,000 +/-. I own both cartridges and actually think the .35 is the better of the two. There are some very hot new loads around (factory) for the Whelen, such as the 2900+ FPS 200gr Hornady Superformance.
I really like the 338-06, but if one was to be had in factory offering of 35 Whelen, I'd sure be happy with that. You might be able to find a donor #1 action to rebarrel to 338-06 for a little less than the Whelen's are going for.
