My Buddy Virgil

I met Virgil for the first time back in 2009 on my first trip to Woods n Water on a hog hunt. We got along famously (he was the guide) and I killed a monster hog on that hunt.

I'll never forget his questions about the "really" big hog I told him I'd killed when I called him to come get me. He asked me "how big" when we finally met and started out to get it. I replied that I wasn't sure if three of us could get it in the truck.

He looked at me with a very odd glance, figuring I was just another newbie. It took a good while for three big fellas to drag that hog 50 yds and then get him in the truck. I'm still happy there was some cold beer he brought after we finished.

My very good friend Virgil passed today. He was a veteran, an excellent guide, a tough man and a friend I and all my friends who met him will never forget. There was some talk about Virgil joining me and another good friend of both of ours on a bear hunt in Maine this September.

Obviously that ain't gonna happen. Not much more to say except I'll miss him. I'll miss including him with my respect for his service on veterans day and my updating him on our latest WW hunts. Virgil loved seeing us do that.

Safe passage my good friend and I'll hope we meet again.

I want to thank you guys for stopping by with your kind words. Virgil was a good man and I enjoyed every day I got to spend and hunt with him. I'm pretty sure he'll be very popular with turkey, deer and hog hunters up there and I know they'll appreciate him as much as I have.

I'll try to find a couple pictures and add them here later.

Here's Virgil with a couple of young turkey hunters he helped bag that gobbler. I know those boys and have watched them grow for several years after that photo. They are the sons of a friend of mine. They've known Virgil for as long as they can remember I'd figure. I think this picture says it all.
