I also vote that to be a cross-breed. The head just doesn't look like a coyote to me. The article mentioned gray wolves and said there weren't any around in MO anymore, but I beg to differ. About 4 years ago, a wolf was tagged (No. 7) on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Two years later, it was shot and killed on a chicken farm just SW of Milton, Iowa... a few miles north of the MO line. It is not the first time a MI or MN wolf was killed that far south, either. I do agree with one of our posters in that this looks more coyote/dog mix than wolf.

,,,,,let me ask you something,,,If you shot a 104 pound coyote wouldn't you take a picture of the entire animal?
Something don't sound right here...

That's like catching a state record fish and only taking a picture of its head............................

Read the article, they did a DNA test and showed it was a coyote.
I'm certainly not an expert on DNA testing. I've heard that timber wolves and malmutes are so closely related it's very difficult to tell them appart by DNA tests. Maybe the same thing could apply to coyotes.... I just don't know.

Keep in mind that it is a lot easier to read the test as 'coyote' than to admit there could be wolves in a state that doesn't "have" any (and therefore does not at the current time, "need" a federally approved management plan).

Given that dogs, coyotes, and wolves can breed together.... the DNA could be a bit 'fuzzy' to say the least. Which marker do you call definitive?

I've shot a lot of coyotes and never seen one that looked like that. Its not a domestic dog either. Coyotes are brown, have a different face profile with a shorter and pointier nose, and the most well known fluffy tail. That critter looks like a wolf to me.

Alpo..... got a laugh out of that. One summer I spent living in my grandparent's house, when they were out traveling. Found a can of Alpo (the real stuff) in the kitchen cabinets. Only thing was, their dog had died 17 years earlier (per my uncle who found it equally amusing).

Threw it out! Probably could have sold it for a fortune on E-bay, if it hadn't rusted out since then.

Growing up, we had a dog that was half huskie, half collie, and looked a lot like the picture. Had one blue eye and one brown eye. All the neighborhood kids were her friends, but it wouldn't let their parents into the yard to get the kids. The parents had to stand at the gate and yell for the kids to come out.

Thanks for the memories!!!!!

Coyote??? Yeah right, ears are wrong color is wrong and Ive never even heard of a coyote even close to 100 pounds.

My advise? Shoot, shovel and SHUT UP! You really don't need to have a wolf protection program in your state and dealing with the owner a that husky wouldn't be fun.
