In case you missed it, read the second quote in MikeG's signature. ;)
read the first quote genius boy wonder.... don't spill your sippy cup. Your mommy might not want to have a puddle of apple juice to deal with. Going up and down the stairs at her age must be a real pain in the ***.

its like the old joke, yeah a 160 grain hollow point works well in a 45 acp. If it expands it gets less expansion then a 25acp. and if it fails to expand it penetrates like a 158 grain lrn in a 357 magnum

While guiding om wild hogs in grad school, I switched to the 41 mag from the 44 mag because of better penetration with the 41 on a pig's skull. No records but the sample size was about 200 hogs.

How many years has that been? If the .41 was penetrating better than the .44, you were using the wrong .44 bullet.

In the contest of which gun is better there are a lot of ways to judge "better".
There are a number of powders that give varying velocities; There are many bullet types and weights that will yield different results based on velocity and range and where they hit the target; There are different barrel lengths and sights and grips that you can use to make your favorite gun fit "only" you. Calibers, bullets, and any combination you might use to compare.
Ultimately it will be which one works best in your hands.

from an engineering standpoint, thin and long DOES do better at penetration then short and fat.

Meaning your .357 magnum or 41 magnum at heavy for bullet weights WILL penetrate better then a 44 or 45 colt of same weight.

length times diameter wins. and long and thing according to beartooth deflects less in penetration. and the thinner diameter puts the bullet impact force on a smaller surface area DECREASING resistance to the bullets penetration

After reading this old conglomeration of postings, I came away amazed at the breadth of knowledge among this cite's posters. There's a lot of knowledge to be gained here.
