I have a Marlin 17V HMR. 17HMR ammo is getting hard to find in my town and the manual says that the rifle can handle .22 LR as well. I already have a Ruger 10/22 but I'm thinking about trying the .22 ammo in my 17. Is this really advisable? Would there be a big performance difference? Could it mess up my 17?

Hi Tomemery, welcome to the forum. The rules are simple, be nice and join in!

A .17 hmr CANNOT shoot .22 LR! The Bore sizes and chambers are different. They are entirely different rounds.

I don't know if you could get a .22 LR to fire in your Marlin, but if you could YOU WOULDN'T WANT TO! It would be dangerous.

The .17 hrm is based off the .22 Magnum, so you should be able to just re-barrel to .22 Mag but that wouldn't be worth the trouble (plus the .22 Mag would be only a little more available than .17 hmr). If you have a .22 LR already, just shoot that with the proper ammo and when .17 HMR becomes available, STOCK UP!

I would like a .17 hmr, what do you think of it?

read your manual again... it says that your MAGAZINE will accept .17 HMR and 22Mag, so if you got another marlin in 22 Mag you could swap mags... but DO NOT shoot anything but 17 HMR in this rifle...

i hope this doesn't come off 'brash'... but it seems to me that any gun owner should know better than to shoot anything but the prescribed caliber ammo in any firearm (with very few exceptions)... i hear and read these kinds of questions more and more... and it scares me

I must have misread this paragraph from the Marlin .17 HMR manual:
Your rifle is chambered for 22 rimfire, 22
Winchester Magnum Rimfire, 17 Hornady
Magnum Rimfire, or 17 Mach 2. These
cartridges are shown below, actual size.
None of these cartridges are interchangeable
with any other.

I probably should have paid more attention to the last sentence.
TI love my .17 with its Nikon Prostaff scope. It's very accurate (all in the red bull's eye from 50 yds; I'll take on 100 yds next.

Ammo is readily available off of the internet. If you can afford it, I reccomend buying in bulk. Especially if you can find a sale. I have missed out on a couple good sales and have been kicking my self ever since.

I own a Savage 17 HMR rifle, it shoots well, but I do wait for sales on ammo and buy 10 boxes at a time. The ammo is pricey to me, and I don't shoot the rifle that much.

You shouldn't have a problem buying ammo off the internet in Canada, I would think the biggest thing would be to make sure the seller ships there, I know when I order "some" ammo from MidwayUSA.com, when you get to the screen that gives you the shipping options, it'll say something to the affect of "cannot ship to Canada" or similar.
