I have a 357 1894C, and it has no cross bolt safety. A cross bolt is a round bolt at the rear of the receiver that slides back and forth and blocks the hammer from falling completely, which in effect "locks" the hammer.
Cross bolt safeties appeared on Marlin lever guns in 1988 I believe. I have a 1988 39AS that is the first year, and has a safety. Not 100% about the rest of the line, but it makes sense that they were the same.
Stretch is right, the 1894CS has the safety, the 1894C did the beginning. After a number of years Marlin dropped the "S" I believe, but the safety is still there.
