Okay, now I have bought some Barnes 100 TSX bullets, some RL-22 powder and CCI magnum primers. I am shooting a Rem 700 with a 24" barrel. I am ready to start testing. I know that I have to start low and work up. The information I have gathered from other sites
varies quite a bit. Maximun loads are from 55.5 grains to 58.0 gr. Also I have read that these bullets like a bit of jump off the lands for better accuracy. I have also read that the best accuracy with the combination of powder & bullets comes when loading near the top of the scale. These are things that I have just read but I am optomistic in believing it.
I would like to know what to expect , being realistic, a maximum load & chronographed
velocity combined with accuracy. This rifle is a tack driver with factory ammo.
I live near the Rocky Mountains at an elevation of 3750 ft above sea level. I hunt mostly
Whitetails & Mule Deer but still hunt Elk and Bighorns. I plan on using the TSX bullets for everything.
Any information or pointers to the above will be greaty appreciated.

Happy Hunting,

Gerry

I too am just now switching to Barnes, at least for a trial, in my 243.

I've been told to clean all copper fouling from the barrel before shooting any Barnes. And clean thoroughly again when switching from Barnes to jacketed.

Rancher, max loads drift a lot for many reasons. Brass thickness, chamber size, actual bore diameter, distance to the lands, etc.

In the real world of handloading, nothing is for free. X amount of progressive powder may give very different velocities in different rifles, and it's due to the combination of efficiencies/inefficiencies in the variables, but a maximum speed is the sum of the same variables in your gun. If the manual says 3000fps with a max load, a reasonable indicator or goal would be 3000fps in your rifle. You might not see problems with 3100fps, but it's hinting that you got the extra speed from somewhere, and presdsures above the listed load are a likely source.

Oh, and some manuals are consistantly more optimistic than others.

I have used the old style 85 grain X bullets in my M77 Ruger because my rifle has always preferred lighter bullets. Going from memory, I used 46.0 grains of Varget for my hunting load and it runs around 3500-3550 out of my rifle.

I'd only buy a box and see if your rifle like them ,each rifle digest bullets it like.Case in point I have 375 h+h and 7mm rem mag that shoot sub moa with barnes and a 243 win that makes a nice shotgun pattern at a 100 yrds with them.So gett a barnes manual pick 3 powders that produce the velocity you are looking for, load up 10 of each powder.Take to range and see wich one prints the best.If you find satisfactory results with one.then work up the load, tinker with the seating depth to find the sweet spot you should find a load that works for you.IF you can't get them group for snot then you are only out one box of bullets
