Son wants to start hunting with me next season.  Like the -.06 but also looking at the .260 Rem.  Possible rifles include Ruger M77, Browning A-bolt and the Rem M700.  Would appreciate your experiences with this set-up.  Anyone consistently cleanly taking elk with the .260.  Supposedly it duplicates the 6.5x54 Swede, which has been used for generations to take moose.  Any thoughts?

What do you want to hunt?  Moose?  I'd say the '06 is a better choice.

However, the .260 is really smart choice as an all-around deer cartridge.  The cartridge is to the Swede Mauser what the 7mm-08 is to the 7x57 Mauser.  (Which makes you think, "gee, Mauser got it right early on and everything else is a minor, incremental improvement").

From a handloader's perspective, lots of good bullet choices and the base .308 case ensure availability beyond our lifetimes.  Also, you don't have to fret the freebore issues that the Mausers bring to the table.

If I wanted one of those really light bolt guns for deer or goats, that's the cartridge I'd choose.
