Anyone ever work up loads for the '06 in the rem 7600 carbine with 18.5 inch bbl? I want to shoot 165 gr bullets only around 2600 fps, and thought a fairly fast powder might do this efficiently in the 18.5 inch barrel.

This rifle will be fitted with a Red Dot sight because of aging eyes and held to 150 yard shots at whitetails, and possibly a little 110 PSP varmint work. Also need a recommendation for a 110 gr bullet that will fragment at 2000 fps for safety reasons.

I use Varget for 165gr. bullets, in a 24" barrel. It works well even though the load density isn't all that high. My conclusion was that it is about the fastest powder that was suitable for the '06 and that bullet weight. Might work for the 110's too, haven't tried it yet.

Good luck.

Thanks, I will give Varget a try. I did look in the 2002 Hodgdon Brochure, and they do list Varget with some nice velocities for the 165s, but I used up my last pound a week ago in my 223. They did show Benchmark 3 grs lower than Varget for the 165s, but its faster than 4895, so I dropped to 150 gr Nosler BT 2.5 grs below max and got an ave 2792 fps. I then went to a max load of 49.5 grs Benchmark and 2874 fps. This is only 70 fps slower than their 24 inch test bbl in my 18.5 inch bbl, so it looks like the fast powder theory works over the chronograph at least. I will do my accuracy work at about 46 grs with this bullet.

I'll get some Varget tomorrow and work with the 165s. It does look like the best of the faster powders in the '06 at this weight. I'll let you know how it works.

I have not worked with the '06 in 15 years and never in such a short barrel. I am pleasantly surprised how well the benchmark worked - low recoil and very little muzzle flash. Reloader 7, which is much faster and tested 10 grs lower had a big flash...go figure.

The 110 gr work up will start with AA2230 because its nearly as fast as Benchmark and i have 9 pounds of it. I'll try Varget and Benchmark too.

The Varget worked well with 165 PSPs, as you suggested. I reached the Hodgdon max of 50.5 grs with no high pressure signs and 2745 fps from my 18.5 inch bbl. This and the Benchmark loads are keepers.

AA2230 was very surprising, and reached 3409 fps 3 grains short of AAs max load for 110 gr PSPs. My gut tells me that this is too fast for the 18.5 inch bbl so I cut back 2 grs for an average velocity of 3200. Accuracy may be problematic, as this is plus or minus 50 fps due to load density.

I plan smoe more work with IMR 4064 tomorrow.

That's pretty good velocity for the 165s in the short barrel, I think that I get a little over 2800fps from a 24" barrel with something near a max load.
