Ok,i set up a box full of old magizines(like catalogs lol)at about 70 yards away, shot it with my 30-06 shooting Remington Core Lokt 150 gr. SP.It stopped 12'' through and i recovered the bullet. Is this normal penetration for a 06? May be a stupid question but i thought a 30-06 would just go right through 30'' of magizines. Thanks

First off the 30-06 is a grand cartridge that has been taking big game for more than a century. Paper is a tough medium to test bullets. Secondly the higher the impact velocity and the softer the bullet constuction the faster the mushrooming of the bullet thus slowing penatration. The 150 Rem Core-Lokt are renouned for being fragile fast opening bullets.

If you get 12-16" in books thats about normal with a cup an core bullet! Try 180gr bonded bullet if you want more! Them 150gr are kind of light for the '06 165 and up are the best! You want extreme penertration go with Barnes!

Those 150gr CL's will drop any deer you put them to task on. They hold up much better through softer tissue than through a box of stacked magazines.

If your shooting factory loads the only issue you need to worry about is getting more than one box in the same lot#. If you loading them yourself, keep them to around 2850fps and the most accurate load you have will work fine.

I have shot thousands of the CL's in various calibers and the bullet never failed to do what it was supposed to. I cannot say the same for the shooter, and even then they performed everything I could have asked for. Here are some pic's of a 120gr CL which left the muzzle at 3350fps, and took a decent feral hog at approx. 150yds, and impacted faster than most leave the muzzle at,

Feel free to look around on the photo site here,

Most all of the hogs taken there were using the 150gr CL from a Ruger Compact in .308 which only has a 16.5" barrel, seen in several of the pic's. Some of the bigger ones were dropped out to 400yds with one shot stops using that little rig. If that isn't enough bullet in an '06 for a deer then you need a bigger gun period.

that hog makes you look small with it in front of you and your boy.
Well I would be proud for him to be mine, and he is in a way, he is my grandson. He has a couple to his credit as well using the same rifle and reduced loads. He got the one pictured with him and the rifle two weeks before his 4th birthday.

nice hog by the way!
Thanks. We get some good ones here and there. We take out what ever we can. I help do eradication on them at a friends two places and we hardly make a dent. Hard to keep up with them the way they breed, and have no natural predation.

The old Core Loct is still the deadliest mushroom in the woods and as good a cup and core bullet as you can find .
Absolutely, and I hear that hogs like mushrooms, so it's a natural for them as well. :)

squirrel sniper..i tried to see the penetration of my 06 an 30 30..
170 grn power pt. 30 30 took 7, 2by 4s [1/4 inch spacer between each stud]to stop,,if memory serves..
180 grn 06 went through 8..also a half inch backing ..bullet kept booking an was not recovered..the holes really were big in the last 2-3,, 2bys..i run out of 2by 4 pieces..
either is plenty for my needs..
30 inch penetration through hard packed paper ,,takes a lot of power..more than i need..jmo slim

i guess hard packed paper is tougher than deer.
To see more closly how they might react, put in some thins cardboard pieces, with a couple pieces of 1/8" siding or similar type material inside that to replicate ribs structure, then on the inside of all this put in one of those big party balloons filled with chilled jello to represent lung or similar tissue. Be sure to use a nice color which will look cool exploding.

Behind that just put some jugs of water standing in a row to catch the bullet. OF look around on the net to see if you can find the recipe for some homebrew ballistic gelletin.

I used to try and come up with tons of test similar to what your using. ALso you might want to soak those books in water for a few days until fully wet and hang them across dowels to hold them up and give a inch or so between. Line up 12 or so spread out then put the remainder, of soaked ones, in the end of the box to catch things.

Thats a spendy target!

I settle for gallon jugs out to 500 yards, not that easy with an iron sighted M1 Garand shooting offhand.

Load up some of these spitzer solids and it'll punch right through that stack of magazines!

I have some loaded up in my 25/06 for coyotes.
