I am thinking again of buying another 308 .
I see TC has a 10-1 ROT remingtons with 12-1 and tikka with 11-1.

I would probably be shooting 165- 180 gr Bullets --- so what then would be the best ROT for that bullet weight .
Most of the shooting would be probably be paper punching @ our 100 range but might also be used for yotes

I am thinking the tikka , but the 10/1 too has been around since I was just fed with a bottle .

Rugers and Savages also have 1 in 10 twists. I personally haven't seen any practical difference between and 1 in 10 and 1 in 12 for a .308. Unless you are going to go with some real long bullets like Bergers or 220 grain bullets, I would go with the gun you like and not fret over whether it is 1 in 10 or 1 in 12. And those long bullets are generally not suitable to the .308's short neck anyway.

With heave bullets 180 to 220 gr 1:10 seams to work best. Temperature and low bullet speeds will cause stability issues with some 1:12 barrels. This is because of air density and low spin rates on longer heavy bullets

If you are shooting 150 to 165 gr bullets then a 1:12 should work just fine but so will a 1:10 or 1:11.

I have a very fine 308 with a 1:12 twist rate and it is very finicky with 180 gr and heaver bullets. All of my 1:10 barrels show no signs of this condition.

Being one of those that was born shortly after the second world war , 308 choice was always long / short / heavy / light barrel and only a 10-1 twist .

So none of my guns have that pink or purple finish, but up to try something new if it is going to be better . So far I hear the 10 to one is not broke - in other words buy what you like - say maybe something like a 10-1 or 11-1 twist . What ever suits your mood .Even target barrels come out with at least these two . Not worried about a thosand yards nor does the tempature get that hot in the summer , or do we shoot when it's -40 .

My 700 BDL has a 1:12
My Nat Match M1a has a 1:11. The accuracy is incredible.
If I ever had to rebarrel the 700, it'd be in in a 1:11.
The 11" twist will allow you to go to 200 grain bullets with ease, just as water man stated.
