On the rim most of the time. Can always check by shortening a case and checking to see if it falls into the chamber deeper....if you don't have a trimmer, then can always file one case as a check.
Some ammo is firmly crimped and some is not. Take a good hard look at WW Silvertip ammo and you'll notice it is firmly crimped...so is some maker's versions of ball ammo. Other ammo is not crimped.
BUT there have been so many .32ACp pisols from so many makers, and some are a bit on the sloppy side, that I have seen old pistols that do headspace from the case mouth (perhaps by designe...perhaps by sloppy chambering...and perhaps by just being abused/worn).
