Someone here might be able to help me out. A friend of mine purchased a used 336, the serial number is 250 558 XX. Can some tell me when the gun was made? Thanks very much for the help.

According to this site http://oldguns.net/sn_php/marlinlookup.php your friend's rifle was made in 1975.

when using numbers only on the serial #. take 100 and subtract the first two digits of the serial number.

100-25 = 75 thus 1975
