Well,Now.....Bill, thank you for the kind words!
Shoalbass..The Marlin .35 you mentioned is a great rifle to start the 14 year old out on. Many of us on this forum feel that the .35 remington is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, brush cartridge ever to be made. In 2008 it will be 100 years old! The grand old cartridge is just pure pleasure to work with. It can be loaded with 158 gr. .357 pistol bullets all the way up to the famous 200 gr Remington Cor-Lok. It will be a rifle the 14 year old can "grow into" It is also a great cast bullet gun if you keep the bullets "hard"
We shoot, and have tested on game, the Beartooth .358" 185 gr FNGC in various .35 Remington rifles...all shot it well!
We push it up around what the jacketed bullet gives for velocity! However, that bullet can be loaded down to .357 Mag levels for training and plinking.
Here are some of our favorite loads:
(1).357" Speer 158 gr jacketed soft point(pistiol bullet)- 31 grs of IMR 3031 @ 2000'/"( 20" barrel)
(2).358" Beartooth 185 gr FNGC-28 grs of Re7
(2).358" Beartooth 185 gr FNGC-34 grs of Re7
(3).358" Hornady, Sierra, Rem. CL( best) 200 gr jacketed bullet-34 grs Re7 or 37 grs IMR 3031 @ 2184/2080'/"( 22" barrel)
The 185 gr Beartooth FNGC is perfect for training. It should be remember though these different bullets will not impact at the same place and re-sighting may be necessary.
I see you are from the great state of Georgia...my late fathers people are from the Bibb and Jones county area, coming there in 1800. I'm kin to all the Gates, Dewberry, Roquemore and Bazemore Clans up there! Also the Coleman, Sheppard, and Sykes Clans over toward Savannah.I lived in Macon for many years, working for Winchester-Western. We killed some real big deer up around Round Oak.
Keep in touch.......Best Regards, James
