Your results prompted me to contact Western/Accurate to get a recommendation for 200gr and 225gr. (My true interest is finding the best powder for my .358 WSSM, for which I have been using .358 Win data to work up loads, same case capacity, etc...)

Here is the e-mail from them.... which pretty much duplicates what I've found with BL-C(2) and IMR-4985 (2380fps 22" barrel with a 225gr)... so yes, your results with a 250gr are still "quite impressive" but is makes me wonder what your actual pressure is?

kludge,

We suggest the following.
Caliber: .358 Winchester.
Barrel length: 24”
Powder: Ramshot – TAC®.

Bullet weight: 200 grains.
Start load: 43.0grains (2300 – 2350 Ft/p/sec)
Maximum load: 48.0grains (2450 – 2550 Ft/p/sec). LD ca 108%.

Bullet weight: 225 grains.
Start load: 41.0grains (2000 – 2100 Ft/p/sec)
Maximum load: 46.0grains (2300 – 2400 Ft/p/sec). LD ca 106%.

NOTES:
It’ important to note that SAFETY is our prime concern therefore we strongly recommend.
1. TO ALWAYS BEGIN LOADING AT THE RECOMMENDED MINIMUM “START” LOAD and develop loads in 2% increments towards the MAXIMUM load.
2. If possible, measure the velocity and correlate with our data.

Kludge,

I know QuickLoad is not an authority, especially compared to the ballistician for a given powder company, but Johan's recommendations for TAC and the 358Win are a little bit on the conservative side. QL suggests 2400fps is possible with the 250gr Nosler Partition and 2550fps is possible with the 225gr BT or PT. The numbers I ran are with the bullet seated one caliber deep.

I still don't know why Ruger dropped it. I had thought of adding one to go with my BLR but never did. Guess I'll have to either build one or keep an eye on Gunbroker. I prefer the wood/blue like yours but most I see for sale are the stainless.

My BLR is actually fairly strong. Not like the Ruger but it's definately the strongest levergun.

The BLR is fully the equal of the M77 pressure-wise. I own both a BLR and Hawkeye in .358 and they are of equal strength. Remember, the BLR in SA form is also chambered in .325WSM and .300WSM, so it's good for 65,000 PSI +/-.

beartracker, thanks for the additional info; I understand and completely agree with your reasoning for not posting actual load data here, and the powder companies reasoning for being conservative, so perhaps another question regarding your experience with TAC?

Among others I have tried IMR-4985 and BL-C(2) have given me the best results, however I am not comfortable compressing 4895 any further and BL-C(2) started to get erratic (velocity readings) if it was compressed more than just a little, plus it's rather sensitive to temperature (I dropped 60fps with a 40 degree drop in temperature).

Can you comment on the temperature sensitivity and compressibility of TAC in your experience? And being so close to 4895 should I expect much difference? TIA.

Hello Gents,

I'm in the same boat as many of you all, my 358s are both a Browning and Ruger Hawkeye. Mostly the Ruger these days, it doesn't handle quite as well as the Browning, but I've found it to be less particular, and quite a fine hunting tool. It holds onto the target better, being just the right shade muzzle heavy. I reach for it all of the time, and have swatted a bunch of creatures with this dude. It is one fine hunting rifle.

I've gotten 2400 with a 225, and have been happy as a clam with that. I'm proud to see that its doable with the 250, but I don't think I'll go that route. That bullet going that fast- will do whatever you need it to do in North America, I'd say. I did the 250 partition at 2350fps, 350 RM, and it really has some swat. I wouldn't have the first reluctance to shooting a mature grizzer with it.

Hope things are well with you all, good to see you fellers.

Steve
