It's a 30-06 shell casin streched out to the length of a magnum and necked up to .366 caliber or 9.3mm
it has 4100 ft lbs of energy and 2555 fps with a 260 grain bullet.I thought it was a 375 cal at first but no also there are a couple of after market bullets for it like a 250 grain accubond etc made for the 9.3x62mm .comes in the sako 85.only one factory load for it though.but i like the way sako rolls of the tongue :D.doubt i will ever buy one since i got a custom build of somthing on a whole nother scale.but still .kinda reminds me of a even bigger version of a 35 whelen

IMO, if you want something that big, it seems the 9.3x62 or the 9.3x64 have you covered and have been around a bit longer. I think the 9.3mm are most interesting with the 286gr bullet. Maybe having a non-metric name (for marketing reasons here in the USA... in Europe it's the 9.3x66), it might catch on and be a viable alternative to the 35 Whelen, though.
If i get something under .50 cal it might be it .But with a rifle costing 2k i dont think it will catch on unless a cheaper rifle like savage or rem 700 gets chambered in it till then it might as well be a wildcat
Can't really see the utility in it. The .30 and .33 magnums kick out that kind of energy, or more. The .37 magnums toss the same weight bullets (or more) and considerably more energy. All of them are chambered in oodles of readily available, cheap-to-shoot and cheap-to-buy rifles. But, I guess, if it sells somebody a few rifles and tickles someone's fancy.....then why not???
The 9.3x64 is a more powerful cartridge. But frankly, as magnumitis said, a .375 H&H would more than blow any of the 9.3's out of the water.

Definitely... on both ends ;)

...and it only goes UP from the .375 H&H ! .375 Ruger, .375 Weatherby, .375 RUM, .378 Weatherby :D

Seriously, the 9.3's are interesting, but really fill a slot that dont need filling. A .358 Norma will pretty much perform with any of the 9.3's as well. 250gr Partition @ 2600+ from a 24" barrel. 9.3x64 Brenneke does a 250gr @ 2800 from a 26" barrel.

I seen them use the .370 Sako on Federal Premium Dangerous Game, and they tried HARD to push their product. Federal and Sako should have used the .375 Ruger case, if they wanted to make a modern .366 Magnum ya know ?
Well... I agree with you (about the .375 doing the job) but, from what I understand, there are places where the 9.3mm bullets are legal for certain game but the .358s are not. (I know... it doesn't make sense when a powerful .358 puts more energy downfield than a 9.3mm but there you go.) I have toyed with the idea of getting a 9.3x62 barrel for my Encore but I don't see anywhere that makes them. The 286gr 9.3mm has higher SD than a 250gr .358 (both are common weights of factory loads).
In light of this topic, I've emailed a guy at the Long Range Hunting (gasp) forums. He has a 9.3 RUM. Im curious to see what it gets out of it.
I'm sick, cant sleep and Im bored, so I did some playing with Quickload.

If I remember my dates correctly the .375 H&H came out in 1912, the 9.3x62 in 1902 or 08' and the 9.3x57 even earlier. The 9.3 lost alot of their infulence after WWII when German guns and ammo were not longer offered on the dark continent. Most African countries do allow the 9.3 to used on large dangerous game.

I've had a project on the back burn for the last ten years to built a 9.3x62. My action is a Czech BRNO pre WWII miltary 98 action which was orginally 7.9x57 for Persia (Iran) There are not many 9.3 barrel choices in the US. I shouldn't have to modifiy the magazine, follower, bolt or feed lips on the action (length wise it will fit a 30-06 ctg) The standard 286 gr bullet is long and heavy for caliber which gives excellent pentration on game. My other course of action is to restore as a K98/vz24 and buy a new CZ550 in 9.3.

I got a reply back about the 9.3 RUM

It turned out identical to the .375RUM (26" barrels).
225-230 grain bullets max 3250fps
256 grain bullet 3120fps
286-293 grain bullets 2950fps.

Bullet performance from the RWS stuff was the same as U.S componants but twice the price and half the BC. I wanted to test the 9.3 at high velocities on game. Its odd, people rave about the 9.3 but it really isn't any different to the .375 apart from the afore mentioned extra cost of projectiles and loss of BC.

Most of the RWS stuff was similar to the results you would get with the Interlock. The H-Mantel was the only one that gave substantial penetration. To get premium performance, it was back to U.S designs like the old Partition and Barnes. The Aussie Woodleigh bullets were good as were the Norma core bonded Oryx bullets.

Oh, its one of my favortie forums. I added the "gasp" because I said long range hunting, and that around here is a naughty word.
oh yeah lol .lots of people hate long range hunting but i say more power to them.they protect the second admedment like everyone else maybe more because what the do is such a big controverscy .:D.
My light weight Tikka 9.3x62 is my favourite gun/caliber. It doesn;t kick and drops pretty much anything I aim at like a sledgehammer hit. 9.3x66 or 370 Sako is just a slighter faster version with a bit more kick and hitting power. interesting but I aint trading in the 9.3x62 yet.
The old one is "just right" in my books.
