I spent a lot of time researching, trying to find a fair comparison. None out there. I have started my own data gathering, since I now own both the Alaskan and African. I am compiling data, so the next person that wants to know the real difference in the two barrel lengths, it will all be in one place. So far, 20-22 fps per inch is all the difference it has made.

African with Wood - 7.4 lbs
African with Hogue - 8.4 lbs
Alaskan with Wood - 7.2 lbs
Alaskan with Hogue - 8.2 lbs

Choice Ammunition
270gr TSX @ 2738
African - avg 2727
Alaskan- avg 2671

300 grain TSX over 69gr of RL15.
African - 2442
Alaskan - 2374

I have some Peregrine 300 grain VRG-3's and some 300 grain RN Interlocks and 300 grain Gamekings that I will be testing next.

PS: If you want factory ammo results for the two, send me 6 rounds of what you want compared.

That's generally true for about any rifle/cartridge.

The more 'balanced' a cartridge is the less difference barrel length makes. Big, overbore cartridges (257 Weatherby is just one commercial example) can lose/ gain 75fps per inch of barrel. Big whoop. A good handling rifle is much more important to me than a fast bullet.

Wow, I'd be looking at my 24" barrel with a hacksaw :) AS JB suggests, that's a real efficient round.

Thanks for posting it, but they didn't test anything but novelty cartridges, and the Crapmore. I would have been more interested in the 7 RM, 300 and 338 Win Mags, Turdy-ot-sux, 7-08, 375 H&H, 416 Rigby, and then of course the WSM clan.

ehhhhh......the wsm clan. i thought that they were disbanded and shunned :ROFLMAO: 😉. the magnums don't interest me. i have shot the '06, 375 h&h and the 416 rigby, but i don't own them(i've had 4 or 5 '06s). i have the 7-08 and shot many deer with it, but i prefer the 7x57.

i've had the 6.5cm in a 23" MGM barrel and it was ok. my 444 marlin in a tc encore with 23" MGM barrel is death on deer. i have the 20 vartarg and 500 linebaugh in 23" MGM barrels.

i used to be a "speed" king with non-magnum cartridges. i've learned to hunt close(150 yards and under) and i'm still learning on cast boolits. i use a 30-40 krag, 7.65x53 argentine, 30 remington, 7x57, 8x57 and 9.3x57 too. i know, speed pawns with cast, aren't they😂.

The 7-08 is one of my all time favorites. They don't all have to be fast to be cool. Just be the opposite of the magazine whore Crapmore.

Don't like the 30-06 or the Creedmoor? That's cool.
Dislike anything you want, but kindly take the rhetoric down a notch.

You have sure changed. Don't seem like the same guy I used to exchange PM's with at all. Heavy is the head I reckon. Good to hear from you, my friend.
