Just got permmision to use pistol calibre rifle and long barreled revolvers at the club I belong to I shoot gallery rifle competions at present with a 22 rimfire but now want to move up to centre fire pistol calibres(38sp at this time due to range restrictions this may change in the futre) I have the hots for a marlin 1894 cowboy(I hope you know what I mean).Any information regarding this rifle would be greatly apreciated many thans Bob

Have watched for the Marlin and seen few opportunities to pick one up lately. I'd think the Rossi in the octagon variation would be quite close and more reasonably priced. I'm not saying it's the same level of firearm, but I know quite a few people who like them.

I don't have the Marlin Cowboy, but I do have a Marlin in .357. It is a short barreled rifle with an 18.5 inch barrel. It works quite well, and feeds .38 and .357 cartridges.
I have lots of friends who use a similar rifle for Cowboy Action matches, and they have put lots of rounds through them with great satisfaction.

Consider a Rossi
I have a Rossi .45 LC and recently purchased one in .357 Mag . I really like both of them .
I almost always shoot my own reloads with home cast bullets . Either in .357 brass or .38 Specials with the bullet seated out to .357 OAL .
But last trip to the range , I tried some factory .38's I came by a few years ago . It feed thos fine .
Fun little gun to shoot , almost no recoil and relativity cheap to shoot with my reloads . What is not to like .
BUT , if you ever plan to put a scope on it , get the Marlin in stead .

My Marlin will shoot both the .38 Special rounds as well as the .357 rounds without any problem. I tend to shoot more .38s in this rifle, as it will only hold 9 rounds of .357, but 10 with the .38. When I use it for COwboy Action most courses of fire call for 10 rounds.

I have an older Rossi Trapper in .357 and find it about the perfect companion to my .357 sidearms. It's about as versatile as you can get and for my purposes, 38/357 can do pretty much anything I'd need from plinking, hunting small game and deer to self defense. I like the Marlins as well and own a number of Marlin leverguns though not a M1894. The CB version is sweet and thats the version I'd prefer. I especially like the way the 1895CB carries and handles. My standard load is a cast RNFP loaded to about .38+P levels in 38 brass. That load shot consistantly well in the carbine and a couple S&W revolvers. The carbine stays sighted with that load and full power .357 loads shoot pretty close at 50 yards, about 2 1/2" higher as I recall. Thats close enough at that range for anything I need a full power load for in a hurry. I know how to twist the sight screws but I like the idea of staying sighted with a standard load that is effective in the field and being able to instantly go to the full power load and not having to wonder about what load I was sighted for. Mild popgun cast loads required alot more sight adjustment to get to full power sight settings.
