Hi, I have a 4 5/8" 357 NM Blackhawk, and the ejector rod housing is too short to allow the base pin to be completely removed. I was thinking a Sheriffs model base pin would be short enough to remove. Do you think it is better to leave the base pin captive so it is not lost, or would the sheriffs model be preferable?

All Ruger Black Hawks have the captive base pin just for the reason you describe. So they don't come out and get lost.
I didn't like that at first, but have gotten so used to it, That I am tempted to replace the old style base pin in my OM SS6 with a newer one.

The only benifit to replacing the base pin with a Sheriffs model, would be increasing the stroke of the ejector rod.

However I would suggest one of Belt Mountains oversized pins, along with a Wolf extra strength base pin latch spring.

Because of "fit" the base pins on some Ruger SA's will begin to unlatch and move forward. This will tie up the gun. Big pain in the rear end.

I guess I was just showing my ignorance, I thought I remembered my 6 1/2 NM BH ejector rod slipping completely out.
Thanks for the reply, I haven't had a problem with the ejector rod moving under recoil on my .357, but I may try the Belt Mountain base pin just to tighten tolerances, a lot I have read here and elsewhere suggests it worthwhile for accuracy.
