If I understand your description, it sounds like you're describing a crimp. This holds the bullet in place under the heavy recoil of the 444 cartridge. It also helps in any cartridge to give consistent pull as the bullet leaves the case, thus improving accuracy and consistency in velocity. I am a firm believer in crimping just about all rifle cartridges for these reasons and certainly for a big bore like the 444 Marlin.
