Hello from Scotland

I am going to give the Ashly outdoor sight a try on my .444p when i get it depending on how i get on (ive never used open sights on centre fire) i may end up putting a scope on it. Whilst  looking at the Ashly web sight i saw there "Scout" mount for the Marlin.
Does any one have this type of scope on there rifles? or do you prefer a normal eye relief scope. I have a simmons 1.5-5x20 doing nothing, but the scout type scope looks well suited to the Marlin ? What kind of magnification are these scout scopes ? And what makes are available? Would appreciate your input.

I've heard some positive "gun shop gossip" about extended eye relief scopes in general but they do take a lot of getting used to since both eyes are kept open.

I do have experience with Ashley Outdoors Ghost Ring Sights and with the company's customer service. I can't say enough good things about both.

Saw no one responding and thought I could shed some light. Jack-Petaluma is obviously a good guy. Several folks have thought about using their traditional eye relief scopes for Scout configurations.  The difference is in the Scout Scopes being an Intermediate Eye Relief (IER) - best focal relief at about 10-13" from the eye.  You will find this much faster in acquisition than a pistol/shotgun scope(mostly Extended Eye Relief).  The IER scopes will facilitate use of both eyes open without the "confusion" of Extended Reliefs being used for same purpose.  The fixed power is one of the reasons it functions better in this capacity.  The magical number two major scope manufacturers reached was 2.5 or 2.75X.  After that the human eye is just not receptive to higher magnification in one eye and no mag in the other - hence tends to want to shut down one eye at higher powers.  As for accuracy - you will find that the Leupold M8IER or Burris Scout Scope will afford you even sub 2"at 100 yds, if you can shoot that well, and provides that well past the ranges you will probably be shooting a lever gun. The main thing it will afford you is the feeling that with both eyes open in a brush setting the reticle is nailed into the back of your shooting eye as you traverse following moving game.  RifleCraft Limited in England should be able to share some information with you (tel 01379-384230 - POC: Andrews Evans-Hendricks.

A Tasco pro point is also an option. Ier scopes by burris and leupold are pricey. I got a propoint on my 1895 gs and it works great.Get the smallest moa dot you can. Propoints have unlimited eye relief, because no magnification. Propoints are short and are about the same length as the reciever

I have a 444P with a Swift 3 X 9 X 40 and a see through mount. If I need extra range I use the scope or if in a tight spot I use open sights. On my 444S I have a Bushnell HOLO sight. Nice for quick find. I have a leupold 3x10x50 vari-x 111 on my .444p. Looks alittle top heavy but works great. Killed 6 deer with this combo this season. It works very well in the thick dark swamps that I hunt in. I just can't get excited about mounting the scope halfway down the barrel. Seems more of a gimmick to me. Plus it probably wouldn't work at all for those dawn and "dark thirty" shots.

Happy, which scope were you referring to ? The one you said was mounted halfway's down the barrel.

I was refering to the ashley scout setup. I don't like it at all. It looks like its halfway down the barrel. If this is so hot why did winchester invent the angle eject instaead of just mounting scopes ahead like people did on the old 94's. Pls. don't flame me I just don't the "scout setup". It looks like a contraption to me.

Happy, no flaming from me. I also think it does not look good. How does the holo sight work when those "dark thirty" present themselves? My leupolds have the heavy duplexes and I'm "spoilt" to them. I have consider a dot sight.

Happy, it does not take in any light but if you can see it with your naked eye, it puts a circle and a dot on the target. But there is not an advantage in that respect. Also no magnification.
