wanting to make a 445 form a 444 marlin lever
445 shoots 44 special and 44 mags
will a 444 shoot a 445 cartridge? 444 is 5/8 longer than a 445
Will the twist difference be a deal breaker
Should I order a blank for a 44 mag and have it reamed?

444 is illegal in IN need a smaller case
could go with a single shot but want a lever "just because" you understand

It looks like a welcome is in order! Glad you could make it. This is a great place with lots of knowledgeable, friendly folks. You'll have an answer soon enough! (And I'm sure enough of us understand your want of a lever action!) :D

Just a couple questions though:

1) why wouldn't you buy a .44 mag lever instead of making one?
2) why wouldn't you buy a .45-70 lever instead of buying a .44 mag?
3) (for my own curiosity) why is the .444 illegal in IN?

Hope that helps, but unfortunately, that's where my knowledge runs out. Good luck with your project.

See you around the forum.

Tugger,

Welcome to ShootersForum! Rules are simple, be nice and join in! :)

I am also from Indiana and have spent a good deal of time learning which cartridges will, and won't, work for hunting deer in our fine, if confused, state.

A lever-action designed for the 444Marlin, rebarreled to shoot the 445 Super Mag would require some work to avoid problems with feeding. On the other hand, if the same gun started out as a 44 Magnum, the longer 445 cartridge would definitely have feed issues.

Like I said, I've done my homework on this dilemma so if you want to send me a PM (private message) I will let you know about the available options, what's easy, what's expensive and what might work well, for your particular situation.

We hope to hear back from you!

Jason
