About a year ago there was a shootersforum.com thread which discussed using sabots in the 45 Colt. I bought a box of 155 gr Hornady XTP .40 caliber (10mm) bullets with green sabots with the idea of loading them in the 45 Colt but have developed a greater interest in a 45-70 sabot load. Anyone have any knowledge/experience with such a load?

Do they chamber OK? That sabot looks kinda long sticking out of the case that way.

kdub,

The OAL is 2.500" and in a USRAC 1886 LW it loads, feeds and chambers as slick as owl stuff. No wobbling, no binding and no effort. It is like cycling an empty chamber. I applied a very light crimp with the Lee factory crimp die.

Tupperware, good for preserving food, lousy for holding bullets in place. Who wants melted plastic down the bore? I know it works well for holding shot, point taken but shot guns don't shoot bullets unless rifled, and rifles don't shoot shot well unless smoothbore.

....better yet is the question of "why"?

Like Swany said about the plastic issue...I would say you will have problem with them beside the plastic issue...But with a good solvent that will come out of the barrel....I have never tried them,so let us know what your getting for accuracy....John What rifle are you shooting them out of????

I agree it would have been interesting. I also think that it would be interesting if you could get a shot cup to shoot out of the 45-70. Many times deer hunting this year I would have loved to plug a menacing squirrel or other small game that needed to be removed but didn't want to waste a good deer load on them.

My Marlin will chamber and eject 2 1/2 inch REMINGTON shotshells. Just leave one empty spot in the mag and keep a few shotshells in your pocket.
I don't know if other shotshells will work, but the Winchesters I tried in my rifle wouldn't eject.
