I am looking at the 45/70 buffalo bore ammo on their website. I couldn't find out if the bullets are expanding or not. If they are do they expand fast enough for deer sized game or are they more or less made for larger thicker skinned game.

The 300 and 350 and 405 grain will expand and the 430 LBT and 500 fmj will not expand but all are around 3,500 ft pounds so they seem to be a bit much for deer, I'd go with the 300 or 350 but even then why so much juice on a deer. "Regular" factory ammunition would probably be a better choice. The 300 grain hollow point at 2,350 fps would make a real big hole......

I will primarily be hunting black bear with these loads, but I was just curious if the chance arose to shoot a buck if the bullet would perform just as well on both types of critters

You don't need expansion on a .45 cal rifle bullet. If it has a flat nose it will make a tremendous hole, buck, bear, whatnot.....
