I have searched all of my sources, and cannot find a load for the BTB 425 WLNGC, or anything close to it, using H4198, for my 1895. There are some trapdoor loads listed that give about 1400fps, but I would like to get to 1800 or better for hunting.

Here is the question for the "wise ones" out there: would it be safe to use a starting load that gives 1850 with the Speer 400gr flat point as a starting load for the 425 cast? I have heard that cast lead bullets give less pressure than copper bullets of the same weight. Is this true?

Does anyone have a load using H4198 for the BTB 425?

Lyman lists a load for a 420grain cast bullet for the 1886Win. and 1895 Marlin using IMR-4198. It doesn't get to 1800. IMR-4198 START 28.5grains 1267fps w/fiber wad over powder----MAX 41.5grains 1737fps.....or you could try this Reloader 7 START 40 grains 1493-----MAX 48.5grains 1828fps......and they show the RE-7 load running 3000C.U.P. less pressure than the 4198 at MAX. Might be something to consider. Loads listed in Lyman reloading handbook #47.

The Hodgdon site shows 46gr of H4198 gives 1850fps at 29,500 cup and 50.5 gives 2000 at 39,400 behind the Speer 400 gr FP. I should be able to get 1800 from a 425 gr cast lead bullet with the same powder. I just need a recipe, and would rather consult the "wise ones" than try to work it up myself. I have several pounds of H4198, and don't feel the need for any other powder in the 45/70.

I looked at it with QuickLoad and my 1895G. Using an OAL of 2.555", an arbitrary Pmax of 42.0K (same as the 444 Marlin vs. SAAMI 28.0), and loading to NMP (85% Pmax).

42.3-grains, 36.0K PSI, 1690 FPS.

Use safe reloading practices and use this information at your own risk!

This being said, I've attached an image of my experience with the QL (estimate) against RSI pressure trace equipment results (actual) using my 1895G equipped with a strain gage, my TLC460-425-RF (425-grains) bullet, and H4895. I have not shot H4198 with this heavy bullet but would expect the data results to be similar (very close).

Note: 52.6-grains of H4895 would give you the same pressure and almost 100 FPS more (1777 FPS at 59°) than the H4198 does.
