I had read a thread earlier that stated that hot 45/70 buffalo bore loads can only be shot in Ballard Type rifling. I was wondering if the 1895 Guide Gun I just bought has Ballard type rifling or not. If not what kind of rifling does it have.

I bought a new MARLIN M1895 about 3+ years ago. It has Ballard cut rifling in the barrel. Accuracy is very good with lead bullets using gas checks. I have NOT used any jacketed bullets in it nor do I intend to. Finding the right load for your rifle might take some time, however, it is quite rewarding at the end. My rifle does quite well at 100 yards without beating either it or me up in the processes.

Look down the muzzle with good lighting and count the grooves.

Ballard rifling typically has 6 or 8, IIRC, while MG has 12.
