My 45/70 custom Contender barrel shoots 400 grain LEE cast bullets into a single hole at 100 yards with 46 grains of I.M.R. 3031 and its all the punishment that I can handle comfortably. 500 grains should be a lot of fun though!

Not trying to be a contrarian here, but a 500 grain bullet in .45 caliber seems like a bit too much of a good thing. There comes a point of diminishing returns and with the various .45s, I think that is about the 400 grain mark. I have used 400 grain bullets in my .454 Casull and 395s in a .460 on game, and while they worked well, they didn't work any better than the 360 grain bullets I have used. Many will argue that 360 grains isn't necessary either.

While I haven't purchased an LBT mould since Veral got back, my experience was very satisfying. Nine different moulds, perfect bullets and great accuracy/performance. You won't be disappointed.

The LBT Blue lube used to be pretty stiff - we had to use a heater on the lubrisizer to get it to flow. It did adhere well to the bullets and wasn't sticky to the touch. It may have been modified in recent years, I got several dozen sticks of lube years ago in a group buy and haven't gone through them all yet.

I just don't get this whole thing with super heavy bullets, not to be argumentative I just really don't understand. Aside from knocking down steel plates the only advantage a heavy slug can offer over a lighter one is increased penetration. If a 300 grain bullet can fully penetrate and exit any animal in North America why would I want still more penetration? Why should I accept lower velocity, higher trajectory and wrist wrecking recoil (say that three times real fast) just to gain penetration I don't need? Again, I don't understand the reasoning here. Is it just a matter of "mine is heavier than yours"?

Get the animals to stand beside each other and fill your whole group's tags with one shot.
