500 Yards With The 30-30 Winchester

The Dirty Thirty can easilly be counted on to harvest deer as far as 700 or 800 yards with the right bullet. Velocities below 2600 FPS aren't a handicap for myself, thats where my domain remains.
Easily?? Counted on???

Nosler Ballistic Charts from the #4 Manual (the one on sitting by my computer) give about 2100 fps for a .30-30 with the 170 grain round nose Partition. At that muzzle velocity, at 600 yards (the end of the chart) the velocity will be 949 fps with 356 ft./lbs. of energy, and it will drop 225.4 inches below a 200 yard zero.

Add another 200 yards to the distance and there is no way anyone should ever say the .30-30 can easily be counted on to harvest deer. If any new hunters are reading this thread, they must understand that, although in theory one can occasionally hit a target at such distances with a bullet from a .30-30, there is no way the cartridge should be thought of as one you can count on to shoot at game animals at such distances. Range estimation, wind, and a bullet drop of over 18 FEET do not make for a "easily counted on" long range round.

Let's be real.

I love those who preach about "clean kills".:D Nobody is perfect, no one shot can be counted on to be a 100% "clean kill". If one has the ability to make long shots, who anm I to say it's unethical ?
While it is true that no one is perfect, no one should deliberately take a shot that has a high probability of wounding. THAT is the ethics of long range shots. If you aren't certain you can make it you shouldn't take it. The fact that, even when one is certain, there can still be mistakes is no argument that it is ethical to blast away and just hope the odds work in your favor.
