Anyone have any experience with this one ?

I have thoughts of finding a decent used Remington 700BDL stainless synthetic in one of the Ultra Mag calibers and rechambering it to this round ?

Already played with the 7mm Ultra quite a bit as I used to have a Remington 700AWR from the custom shop . Shot well enough but I just kinda want an Ultra in 6.5mm :D

Well, it shouldn't be too difficult, although the 7RUM is relatively inefficient, and the 6.5 would be even more so.

If I was going to go with a fat cased 6.5, it would be a 6.5 RSAUM.

Well I could's done that because I just sold Remington Model 7's in 7mm RSAUM and 300 RSAUM .

I'm thinking if I went that route the 6.5mm WSM in a Remington Model 7CDL would be the way to go !

However I already have a 260 REM on a Model 7 , a 6.5-06 on a Mauser 98 and a 264 WIN MAG on a 700BDL Stainless . So to me the next obviouse step is the 6.5 STW or 6.5 Ultra MAG :D:D

I believe you will have a hard time improving over the .264 Mag. Kind of like improving the .257 Weathery Mag. It can be done, but they are already so hot that it takes a lot of powder to gain just a little more. Usually not worth it. My opinion is that the .264 Mag. is already the right sized case. If anything different, custom .264 WSM.

It won't be any hotter than a .264 WM. but could be a short action, if that means anything. You CAN make very large cased medium bores really fly but at a severe cost. I found expected barrel life shot counts somewhere and I think the .25 Ultra was around 250 rounds. Not enough for me. Google or search,,,,,, Ferguson .257 Hot Tamali, I believe. Sick power, major cost. Like buying a Lamborghini.

The 6.5 Allen Mag is the .338 RUM case necked down. It can propel a 100gr bullet at 4100fps when used in a 30" tube.

Go look in the grave yard like I did and build you a 6.5 Remington mag like I did it will out shoot the 6.5-06 or the 260 or the 6.5x284 and the 6.5 wsm with a 120 grain and match or beat the 264 with most of the bullet weights with less powder.

Here, here! I was hoping someone would step up and give some love to my 673/6.5RM. The oldest "fast" 6.5 (along with being the 2nd ever SM) is still a fine round, IMO.:p

The 6.5 Rem Mag is just a short .264 case if you really get down to it. Same belt, same case diameter.

The 6.5 Ultra or 6.5 Allen Mag will be a hoot to play with !

6.5 Allen Mag

Ballistically, you will get the following with a 30" barrel:

100 gr...............4100 fps
120 gr...............+3800 fps
140 gr...............+3450 fps

I've already got a 264 WIN MAG as I mentioned and a 270 Weatherby Mag ! I also know where a NIB Remington 700LSS in 257 Weatherby is sitting ! Think I can get my hands on that one for $750 , just might do that and not have to deal with the custom barrel chambering costs . And if push comes to shove I should be able to get a greater percentage of my money back on the factory chanbered 257 Weatherby then I can on a wildcat !

I don't understand why Remington does not bring the 6.5 Rem mag to life in thier model 700. When I was searching a year ago for something in the 6.5 catagory, I found myself wishing this was the caliber I could find off the shelf. Like it was said, does close to what the .264 does in a short case with less recoil. Sounds like a smooth shooter to me!

6pt, that would be a very good idea. When you start shooting the .257 WBY and the ELK loads are doing 3400 FPS, you will soon realize that anything bigger will kick VERY hard to shoot that flat. If you run 100's for deer and such, you realisticly can't buy a flatter shooting rig. There are other larger bore options that "might" keep up in the real world of experience, but they will have recoil. Good luck whatever you do. In anything of .280 bore and down, I would NOT go any bigger than the .257-.7mm Mag. case. The cases are almost identical. You need the bore to open up a bit to use any more powder efficiently. Just my thoughts.

You may be exactly right but we will still be playing with ours for a very long time after your toy is broken and don't work any more.

The 260 is a great cartridge but it does not do it like the 6.5 RM
There is another 6.5 wild cat coming soon that you will be hearing about that is the 300 Ruger Compact Mag (300 RCM) necked to 6.5 it has the same case capicity as the 6.5 rem mag with out the belt. I think it will be a popular 6.5 before long. When I build mine I will move the shoulder foward .091 to shorten the neck to the same as the 6.5 rem mag. This will do about the same as if it was an AI case.

But if this round acts like the 6.5 Rem. in factiry Hornady trim, it will not handload to the same power safely. They use special powders. If that is true, why buy it?:(

You will not buy it from a factory any where. It will only be a wild cat cartrige.
but it is already being built now.

I don't think it will be a wildcat for long, Ruger is off and running with their RCM design, and rightfully so, even if they are 10 years behind the WSM and RSAUM.
