I was at a public auction this weekend. It was a private estate sale and there was a lot of good stuff. About 15 guns were auctioned at what I thought were high prices. Among them were a pair of 788 Rem. both were in very good to excellent condition.(.222 & 22-250) I was willing to go $500 each. They sold for $650 each. Am I wrong in thinking thast was too much?

Auctions don't always reflect true value because of the "competition" factor. I think those are quite high - but then I think $500 is too high for one.

On the other hand, if I decide to sell, I hope the four in my gun safe pull bids like that!

I remember when the Remington M-788 came out back in 1968, it sold for $99.95!!!! I bought one in .30-30 back in 1991 and paid $250 for it. Wish I kept it now!

In 1969, I bought a 788 in a .243 for $75 . I still have that gun.

Demand is a factor, and I believe that the rifles in .222 and .22-250 are relatively uncommon. I've just sold my 788 in .308 to a pal [replaced it with a Mohawk 600] but I sure wouldn't mind having one in a varmint caliber.

I think $350 to $450 is property value range depending on cartridge and condition. But I have found a couple in the $250 to $275 that needed to refinished, but the bores were good.

Just as recently as two years ago, any 788 at local gun shows could be bought for under $300. Last couple shows I went to wasn't many of 'em around and those present had $450+ price tags. For some reason the prices on those rifles have shot up.
