Has anyone used a "Merit" adjustable peep? Not the kind that fits on your eyeglasses, but the kind that is mounted on the reciever of the rifle itself. Are they reliable and hold up? They cost more than a fixed peep, so I would like some feedback before I put out the money. Thanks.

If you mean a Merrit shutter disc that threads into a reciever sight they are absolutely worth it.I had an older version( wish I still had it!) and on a hunting rifle it gives you the option to customize your aperture to best handle various lighting conditions as well as a smaller aperture for targets or longer range shots or opening it up for heavy brush or low light. To keep the wear on the shutter to a minimum and minimize blueing wear that can lead to glare. I used to use Rapine mold prep. Its a moly-disulfied brew that dries to a fairly durable film with great lubrication qualities with out gumming things up.

I've used them on a lot of different guns and they work great. They are worth every penny and the gentleman who owns the company is a great person to deal with. He takes customer service to a new level. A+ company and product!

The Merit is a good ap. But for hunting I'd recomment a fixed aperature, then it will be what you are use to when the great opportunity appears. Hunting ap should be much larger than a target aperature.

Thanks for the replies. This thread is 3 tears old now and I got the Merit and used it to see what fixed size aperature I liked back then. Now I got a fixed for hunting and a fixed for target shooting. The Merit is used as a backup.

I hope "3 tears old" isn't a Freudian slip. I agree they are reliable as to centring, but their value is greatest for target shooting, where you really want the smallest aperture possible for given conditions. For hunting you need a larger aperture, great precision of size isn't very important, and you really don't want to get the Merit disc wet or dirty. I would then dunk it in alcohol for a while and relubricate the leaves.
